Who Owns the Copyright to Our Wedding Photos?
Quick answer: the photographer always owns the copyright to your wedding photos. You get printing rights for your own personal use, so you can print them, frame them and share them with family and friends. Suppliers who want to use them for marketing need to contact me first.
It sounds complicated, but it’s simple in practice. Here’s what it means for you.
Who owns the copyright?
The copyright always stays with the photographer. That’s standard for wedding photography in the UK, and it’s the same whoever you book.
Owning the copyright doesn’t stop you enjoying your photos. It just means they can’t be sold or used for business without permission, which protects your photos as much as mine.
What you can do with your photos
Your collection includes printing rights for personal use. That means you can:
- print them at any size, wherever you like
- frame them and put them on your walls
- make gifts for family, like calendars, cards and photo books
- share them on your own social media
What you can’t do is sell them or use them commercially.
What about your venue and suppliers?
Your venue, florist, dress shop or cake maker may love your photos and want to use them on their website or social media. That’s great, but they need to get in touch with me first.
It means I always know where your photos are being used, and that they’re used properly. If a supplier asks you for photos, just point them my way.
