Jasmine & Luke Hazlewood Castle
A Midsummer Woodland Wedding in Yorkshire
Where Ancient Stone Meets Whispering Woodland
Some weddings simply have a magic all of their own — a feeling you can’t quite manufacture, only stumble into when the setting, the people and the moments conspire together perfectly. Jasmine and Luke’s wedding at Hazlewood Castle was exactly that kind of day. Nestled in the ancient grounds of one of North Yorkshire’s most breathtaking historic venues, surrounded by towering trees and dappled woodland light, this was a celebration that felt like it had been lifted straight from the pages of a fairy tale.
As wedding photographers we’ve had the privilege of working at Hazlewood Castle many times, but every single visit reminds us just how extraordinary this place truly is. The castle’s woodland area in particular creates a natural cathedral of green — shifting light filtering through the canopy, moss-covered stones, and an atmosphere that feels both timeless and wonderfully intimate. It is, in short, the perfect backdrop for a love story.
A Gown Fit for a Castle
Jasmine was quite simply stunning. She had clearly given deep thought to the setting when choosing her dress, and the result was a choice that left every single guest breathless the moment she appeared. Her medieval-style wedding gown was an absolute masterpiece — flowing fabric that gathered and cascaded with every movement, intricate detailing that looked as though it had been crafted by hand in another century, and a silhouette that felt as though it belonged against the ancient stone walls of Hazlewood Castle itself.
The dress had a romance and a gravitas to it that perfectly mirrored the venue. Structured yet ethereal, regal yet deeply personal — it was the kind of gown that photographers dream of. Every time the light found it through the trees, something magical happened in the frame. We lost count of how many times our breath caught as Jasmine moved through the woodland.
The gown was made for this place — every fold, every detail spoke of ancient romance and woodland magic.

When the Ring Bearer Had Other Plans
The Owl Who Refused the Job
Now, we have to talk about the owl. Because if there’s one thing we will remember about this wedding — and we will remember everything, because it was extraordinary throughout — it is the owl. The plan was wonderfully romantic: a magnificent owl was to glide ceremoniously down the aisle and deliver the wedding rings to Jasmine and Luke in a moment of pure, storybook theatre.
What actually happened was considerably more entertaining. The owl had clearly decided that ring-bearing was beneath its dignity. With total disregard for the carefully rehearsed routine, it took one look at the proceedings, spread its wings, and flew — not to the waiting couple, but directly into a nearby tree. And there it sat. Completely unbothered. Magnificently unimpressed. For the rest of the entire day.
When we packed up and left after 10pm, the owl was still there, perched in exactly the same spot, gazing down at us all with what we can only describe as a look of supreme indifference. Honestly? We think it may have been the most characterful guest in attendance. It certainly got the biggest laughs of the day, and that moment of beautiful, unscripted chaos turned into one of the most joyful memories the whole day produced.
The rings were delivered by slightly more conventional means. The owl kept its dignity intact. Everyone won.

From Dodging Showers to Golden Summer Light
Every wedding photographer will tell you: the light is everything. And Yorkshire, being wonderfully Yorkshire, kept us on our toes for the morning. We spent the first few hours of the day working creatively around the showers — ducking between downpours, finding shelter under the canopy of the woodland, and making the most of the soft, diffused light that overcast skies actually lend themselves beautifully to for portraits.
There’s an art to shooting a Hazlewood Castle wedding in mixed weather, and honestly, those quiet, intimate moments sheltering from the rain produced some of our favourite images of the day. The woodland absorbed the drama of the sky and turned it into something atmospheric and cinematic.
When the Sun Finally Arrived
Then the afternoon happened, and everything changed. The clouds parted, the summer sunshine poured in, and Hazlewood Castle’s woodland transformed into something almost impossibly beautiful. Shafts of golden light cut through the trees, the greens of the grounds deepened and glowed, and Jasmine and Luke stepped into the most spectacular natural studio we could have asked for.
The afternoon and evening unfolded in the best possible way — warmth, laughter, long shadows through the trees, and the kind of relaxed, happy energy that makes our job an absolute joy. Guests spilled out across the grounds, golden hour crept in, and we worked through every corner of the estate capturing the magic.
As the Sun Set, the Magic Began
As the light faded from gold to amber and the stars began to appear, Jasmine, Luke and their guests headed outside for an evening that we’ll be talking about for a very long time. Three iconic moments defined the end of this extraordinary day.
Sparklers, Champagne & Pure Celebration
These are the images couples put on their walls. The ones that, decades from now, will transport them straight back to this feeling — the warmth of that summer evening, surrounded by everyone they love, newly married and absolutely beaming.
Our Signature Wire Wool Shot
And then came our favourite moment of the whole evening: our signature wire wool spinning photograph. If you’ve seen one of these and wondered how it’s done — it’s an in-camera long exposure technique where burning wire wool is spun in a circle, creating an extraordinary shower of golden sparks that surrounds the couple in a cascade of light.
The result is always breathtaking, but at Hazlewood Castle, against the ancient stone and with the woodland as a backdrop, it reached another level entirely. This is the shot we’re asked about more than any other. The one that stops people scrolling. The wow photograph that says everything about how magical and truly unforgettable this day was.

Thank You, Jasmine & Luke
We left Hazlewood Castle after 10pm that evening — tired, happy, and quietly in awe of what we’d just had the privilege of witnessing and capturing. Jasmine and Luke, you created something genuinely special. A day full of beauty, laughter, unexpected moments (we’re looking at you, owl), and an abundance of love.
Hazlewood Castle has been a backdrop for countless love stories, but yours felt entirely its own. The medieval gown in the ancient woodland. The rogue owl who kept his post all day. The summer sunshine that turned up exactly when it was needed. The sparklers, the champagne, the wire wool spinning into the night sky.
This is why we do what we do — to capture days like this, exactly as they felt. Wild, warm, and entirely unforgettable.
Wishing you a lifetime of adventures together. Thank you for letting us be part of this one.
