Hazlewood Castle Wedding Photography: A Photographer’s Guide to One of Yorkshire’s Most Stunning Venues

Hazlewood Castle is one of the best wedding photography venues in Yorkshire – a Grade I listed medieval castle set in 77 acres of grounds, with a cherry orchard avenue, fairy-lit pagoda, woodland paths, and a chapel. After photographing weddings there more times than I can count, I still feel that buzz when I turn up the driveway. The combination of architecture, grounds, and natural light gives you more to work with in one day than most venues offer in a lifetime.

But knowing a venue well is what separates good photos from jaw-dropping ones. This is everything I’ve learned about photographing at Hazlewood Castle over 25 years of shooting Yorkshire weddings.

What Makes Hazlewood Castle Such a Brilliant Wedding Photography Venue?

It’s a proper castle – not a country house that borrowed the name. We’re talking real stone walls, turrets, a history stretching back to the 12th century, and 77 acres of grounds that change with every season. That medieval backdrop does serious heavy lifting. Even a quick couple portrait looks incredible when you’ve got those stone archways behind you.

Focus Photography has photographed weddings at venues across Yorkshire for 25 years, and Hazlewood consistently stands out for sheer variety. In the same day, I can shoot in the chapel, the walled courtyard, the woodland, the pagoda, and then come back for a twilight shoot around the castle exterior when that golden hour light hits the stone. There’s no other venue in South Yorkshire that gives you that range.

Where Are the Best Photography Spots at Hazlewood Castle?

The best spots are the ones most couples overlook until I point them out. Here’s where the magic actually happens:

  • The castle exterior – Late afternoon light catches the stone beautifully. This is where I do most of the formal portraits, and the stone archways give you genuine grandeur without anything feeling staged.
  • The cherry orchard avenue – One of the best walkway locations in Yorkshire. In spring it’s blossom and light; in summer a green tunnel; in autumn, rich golds. I love walking couples through here and capturing the natural moments between them.
  • The woodland paths – Dappled light through the canopy, a sense of space stretching out forever. Brilliant for relaxed candid shots, couples who feel self-conscious, and anyone who wants something a bit less formal.
  • The pagoda and gardens – Where most outdoor ceremonies happen, and where I go back to for golden hour portraits. The fairy lights switch on just as the light drops, and the results are special every single time.
  • The chapel – Intimate and atmospheric. The light through those windows is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. If your ceremony is in the chapel, expect some of the most emotional images of the day.

How Do I Approach a Wedding Day at Hazlewood Castle?

My approach at Hazlewood is candid-first, always. I start with the morning preparations – usually the bride getting ready in one of the castle suites, with all the energy, laughter, and nerves that come with those first hours. I’m capturing what’s happening, not directing it. The real moments are always better.

During the ceremony – whether it’s the chapel or the pagoda – I work quietly, moving around without getting in anyone’s way. My job is to catch the expressions, the reactions, the guests with tears running down their faces. The staged shots can wait.

After the ceremony, I work through the formal groups efficiently. I know couples don’t want to be away from their guests for an hour, so I keep it moving – usually done in fifteen to twenty minutes. Then comes the bit I genuinely look forward to at Hazlewood: the couple portraits in those incredible grounds. With so much to work with, I can get wow images in twenty minutes and save the best light for the twilight shoot.

The twilight shoot is my signature, and Hazlewood is one of the best venues in Yorkshire for it. As the light drops and the grounds take on that blue-hour glow, we head out for a final twenty minutes. The results – dramatic, cinematic portraits against the castle and the woodland – are the ones couples frame and hang above the fireplace. Focus Photography’s twilight shots consistently get the biggest reaction from wedding guests when the same-day slideshow runs at the evening reception.

What Should Couples Getting Married at Hazlewood Castle Know About Photography?

After photographing so many weddings here, there are a few things I always want couples to know before the big day:

  • Build in time for the grounds. Seriously – the venue is big and beautiful, and your timeline needs to reflect that. Twenty to thirty minutes with the couple in the grounds makes a huge difference to the final gallery. Don’t let the day fill up without protecting that space.
  • Don’t skip the twilight shoot. I know it can feel like a long day, but Hazlewood at dusk is something else. The woodland and castle architecture look completely different once the light drops. Every couple who’s done it has told me it was worth it.
  • Don’t overlook the woodland paths. Couples sometimes focus entirely on the castle itself and miss what the woodland and cherry orchard can do. These locations give you something more intimate, more romantic – and they’re genuinely stunning.
  • Every season is different – and brilliant. Spring blossoms, summer green, autumn gold, winter drama with bare trees. I’ve shot Hazlewood in all of them and every season has its own magic. There’s no bad time of year to get married there.

When Should I Book a Photographer for Hazlewood Castle?

As early as you can – honestly. Popular summer and autumn Saturdays at Hazlewood tend to be claimed 12 to 18 months in advance. Focus Photography books up especially quickly for peak season dates, so if you’ve got a date in mind, the best thing to do is get in touch now rather than wait.

If you’d like to chat about how I work, see what packages include, or just check whether I’m available on your date, get in touch here.
