Hellaby Hall Weddings: A Photographer’s Guide

Hellaby Hall is a 17th century manor house turned four star hotel on the edge of Rotherham, and it is one of my favourite South Yorkshire venues to photograph. I have been a wedding photographer for 25 years, and a Hellaby Hall wedding always delivers: beautiful gardens, a relaxed day for your guests, and brilliant backdrops from the ceremony to the last dance. Here is my honest guide to the venue, from a Hellaby Hall wedding photographer who has captured real days there.

If you are still venue hunting, or you have already booked Hellaby Hall and you are wondering how the photography side of the day works, this one is for you.

Why is Hellaby Hall such a brilliant wedding venue?

In short: character, space and convenience. Hellaby Hall is a 17th century manor house that has been sensitively converted into a striking four star hotel, set in picturesque gardens on Old Hellaby Lane. It is within easy reach of Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster, which makes life simple for guests travelling from across South Yorkshire and beyond.

There is ample free parking in the grounds too. That sounds like a small thing until your aunt is circling a city centre car park in her best hat twenty minutes before the ceremony.

From my side of the camera, it is the combination that wins. The interiors feel grand without being stiff, and the grounds give us room to breathe. One couple I photographed there this spring told me it felt like stepping into a period drama, except with better food and better company. I cannot argue with that.

What is it like having me as your Hellaby Hall wedding photographer?

Relaxed, fun and candid first. After 25 years of weddings, I know exactly where to be and when, so you spend your day with your guests rather than standing in a line posing for hours.

The weddings I have shot at Hellaby Hall have had real personality. One couple this spring ditched the traditional tiered cake for a huge tower of donuts, and swapped the bouquet toss for launching a stuffed cat into the crowd, with the catcher ceremonially obliged to adopt a real one. The scramble was competitive, the photos were brilliant, and it summed the day up: traditional where it matters, gleefully daft where it counts. You can read the full story of that wedding here.

I will not keep you away from your friends and family for ages, but I will get all the important photos in a quick and stress free way. Laura and Ricky, who married at Hellaby Hall, put it better than I can: “you made everyone feel relaxed and comfortable whilst still capturing those all important moments.” Their family are still talking about the same day slideshow I played at their reception, which is exactly the reaction I want.

Where are the best photo spots at Hellaby Hall?

The gardens are the workhorse: the lawns and stone paths give us clean, timeless backdrops for couple portraits and group shots, and there is enough space that we are never on top of your guests. The stone frontage of the hall itself is the classic shot, the one that goes above the fireplace.

My favourite time, though, is after dark. Once the evening settles in, the front of the hall lights up beautifully, and that is when I will steal the two of you for ten minutes to create the dramatic night portraits, sparklers and all if your guests are game. Those are the images people gasp at when they open the gallery. You can see more of what that looks like on my twilight photos page.

Which photography collection suits a Hellaby Hall wedding?

It depends how much of the day you want covered. My collections start at £895, and every one includes high resolution images, a private online gallery and printing rights:

  • The Intimate Collection, £895. Four hours of coverage, ideal for smaller celebrations, with a sneak peek of your images within 48 hours.
  • The Classic Collection, £1,295. Eight hours with me from prep to the party, a handcrafted 10×10 album and the same day slideshow played on the big screen at your reception.
  • The Signature Collection, £1,695. Ten hours with two photographers, so while I am with one of you in the morning, my second shooter is with the other. Album and same day slideshow included.
  • The Ultimate Wedding Experience, £2,995. Twelve hours, two photographers, my award winning twilight portraits, a cinematic wedding film, a content creator, a luxury photo booth and a 12×12 handcrafted album. The full works.

For a venue with grounds like Hellaby Hall, I would gently nudge you towards a collection that runs into the evening, because the night portraits there are too good to miss. You can see everything side by side on my packages page.
