Wedding Group Photo List: How Many and How Long?

Quick answer: most couples have 10 to 12 group photos, and they take around 15 to 20 minutes. You don’t need to write the list yourself. My online planning hub works it out for you.

Group photos are the part of the day couples worry about most. Who needs to be in which photo? How long will it take? What about Mum and Dad not getting on? Here’s how I take the stress out of it.

You don’t have to write the list

When you book with me, you get access to my online planning hub. You tell it about your family, and it works out your group photo list for you. It covers separated parents, step-parents, grandparents and anyone you’d like to remember on the day, so you’re not sitting with a blank page wondering where to start.

Your finished list comes with me on the day, so I know exactly who’s in each photo and you can enjoy your drinks reception.

How many group photos, and how long?

Most couples have 10 to 12 groups, which takes around 15 to 20 minutes. That’s enough to get all the photos your family will want framed, without dragging you away from your guests.

Every extra group adds a minute or two, so it’s worth keeping the list to the people who matter most. Friends and wider family are often better captured naturally through the day anyway.

A typical group photo list

Every family is different, which is why the hub builds your list for you. But a typical list looks something like this:

  1. The two of you with your whole wedding party
  2. The two of you with the bridesmaids
  3. The two of you with the groomsmen
  4. The two of you with one set of parents
  5. The same, adding brothers and sisters
  6. The same, adding grandparents
  7. The two of you with the other set of parents
  8. The same, adding brothers and sisters
  9. The same, adding grandparents
  10. Both families together
  11. A big group photo with all your guests

Tips for quick, easy group photos

  • Let everyone on your list know before the day, so nobody wanders off to the bar.
  • Ask someone who knows both families, like an usher, to help round people up.
  • Keep the list short. You can always grab extra photos later in the day.
  • Trust the plan. I’ll keep things moving so you can get back to your guests.

Frequently asked questions

How many group photos should we have at our wedding?

Usually 10 to 12. That covers your close family and wedding party without taking you away from your guests for too long.

How long do wedding group photos take?

Around 15 to 20 minutes for 10 to 12 groups, as long as everyone is nearby and knows they’re needed.

Do we have to write our own group photo list?

No. My online planning hub works out your list for you from your family details, so you don’t have to stress about it.

What if our family situation is complicated?

That’s really common, and the hub is built for it. It covers separated parents, step-parents and anyone you’d like to remember on the day, so the list works for your family.
