Three rooms, one wedding

This is what makes Wortley Hall different. There’s only one wedding a day, and you get three separate rooms for the three parts of your day.

At most venues one room gets turned around for the wedding breakfast, then turned around again for the evening. At Wortley nothing needs moving, so nobody is waiting around while the room is reset. If it rains, the Lounge is free straight after the ceremony for family photos.

My Wortley Hall story

I’ve been photographing weddings at Wortley Hall for around seven years, and I’ve lost count of exactly how many. It must be close to a hundred by now.

I became one of their recommended photographers in 2020. I’d photographed a wedding there that was the new coordinator’s very first, and I did what I always do: helped wherever I could to make sure the day ran smoothly. Not long after, I was invited to their open day as a recommended supplier. Coordinators have come and gone since, but the relationship with the team has only got stronger. Today I work closely with Karla and Ellie, and it shows on the day. We know how each other works, so everything just flows.

Why it’s a photographer’s dream

It’s hard to pick one favourite spot, and that’s the beauty of Wortley Hall. The grounds are perfect for wedding photos wherever you look. For the big group shots, everyone goes on the front steps. Smaller groups go at the bottom of the steps, with the gardens behind them.

The best venue I know for wet weather

Wortley Hall only hosts one wedding a day, and you have three separate rooms: the Lounge (or outside) for your ceremony, the Dining Room for your wedding breakfast and the Ballroom for the evening. If it rains, the Lounge is free straight after the ceremony for family photos, so nobody gets wet and nothing gets rushed. Of all the venues I work at, it’s the one I’d least worry about if the forecast looks grim.

A short history of Wortley Hall

Wortley Hall was the home of the Wortley family, later the Earls of Wharncliffe, for centuries. The family’s records here go back to the 1100s, and the grand stone house you see today largely dates from the 1700s.

During the Second World War the hall was used by the army, and afterwards it fell into a poor state. In 1950 a group of local trade unionists set up a co-operative, raised the money through small shares and bought it. Volunteers did much of the restoration themselves, and it opened on 5 May 1951 as an education and holiday centre for working people.

It’s still owned by the trade union and labour movement today, which is why many of the rooms carry union names, like the Unite Ballroom. It’s known as the workers’ stately home, and that history is part of what gives a wedding here its character.

Yes, there’s free parking on site for you and your guests.

Yes. There are bedrooms at the hall, so you and your guests can stay rather than arranging taxis home.

I’ve lost count, but after around seven years it must be close to a hundred, in every season and every kind of weather.

Where are the best photo spots?

It’s hard to pick one. The grounds are perfect wherever you look. Big groups go on the front steps, smaller groups at the bottom of the steps with the gardens behind, and the interiors are lovely for portraits.

What happens if it rains?

Wortley Hall is the best venue I know for wet weather. There’s only one wedding a day and you have three rooms, so the Lounge is free straight after the ceremony for family photos.

How far in advance should we book?

As soon as your venue is confirmed. Saturdays at Wortley Hall fill up quickly, especially in summer.

What’s included in your collections?

My collections start at £895. Every collection apart from the £895 one includes a wedding album: a 20cm x 20cm album with 20 pages, or a 30cm x 30cm album with 40 pages in the Ultimate collection. You can see exactly what’s in each one on my collections page.

What’s your style?

Relaxed and natural. Most photos are candid, with some posed shots of the two of you and the family groups done quickly so you can get back to your guests.

Do you offer engagement shoots?

Yes, as an extra. They aren’t included in the collections, but they’re a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day, especially if you’re camera-shy. We can do it at Wortley Hall or somewhere that means something to you.

Can we see real weddings at Wortley Hall?

Do you offer highlights videos?

Yes. A highlights video can be added to any collection.

What areas do you cover?

I’m based in Shafton near Barnsley and cover Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and the whole of Yorkshire.
