Cannon Hall Wedding Photographer’s Guide
Quick answer: Cannon Hall in Barnsley offers three licensed wedding ceremony spaces — the outdoor Deer Shelter, the elegant period Library and the Jacobean-inspired Ballroom — set in 70 acres of parkland near Cawthorne. The Walled Garden is used for drinks receptions. Ceremonies are booked through Barnsley Council’s weddings team, and the venue sits around 15 minutes from Barnsley town centre.
If you’re getting married at Cannon Hall and you’re trying to picture how the day actually runs, you’re in the right place. I’ve been photographing weddings across Yorkshire for over 24 years and Cannon Hall is one of the loveliest wedding venues around Barnsley (see my Cannon Hall wedding photographer page). The parkland alone gives you more photo opportunities than most venues have interiors, and the Walled Garden on a warm afternoon takes some beating.
Here’s a practical guide to getting married there — the ceremony spaces, the best spots for photos, realistic timings and what to do if the weather turns, which in Yorkshire it usually does at some point.
Where can you hold your ceremony at Cannon Hall?
Cannon Hall has three licensed ceremony spaces, each with a very different feel. Which one suits you comes down to guest numbers, the season and how much of a statement you want to make walking in.
The Deer Shelter
Outdoors, set in the heart of the parkland. This is the one couples fall for when they tour the venue. It’s open to the elements so it’s a warm-months choice, and the light in late afternoon is gorgeous. Bring a wrap for the photos after the ceremony even in July — it gets fresh out there once the sun drops.
The Library
Period features, panelled walls, bookshelves, and a beautiful calm feel to it. Smaller, more intimate, and works brilliantly for winter weddings when the light outside is flat. It photographs warm and rich.
The Ballroom
The Jacobean-inspired Ballroom is the showstopper. Big windows, decorative ceiling, room to spread out. It’s the one to pick if you want your ceremony photos to have real grandeur. Guests spread into the grounds afterwards for drinks.
You can see more about all three rooms on the Cannon Hall weddings page, and the Barnsley Council venues list confirms it’s a licensed civil ceremony venue.
What are the best photo locations at Cannon Hall?
This is where 70 acres of parkland really pay off. You don’t have to march your guests across the estate either — the best spots are closer to the Hall than people realise.
- The Walled Garden — the obvious one, and with good reason. Soft light through the afternoon, roses in summer, and the stone walls give you a clean backdrop for group shots.
- The front of the Hall itself — for classic couple portraits with the building as the backdrop, especially lovely in the hour before sunset.
- The Deer Shelter area — even if you haven’t married there, the parkland around it gives you a completely different look from the formal garden shots.
- The lake and parkland pathways — for a ten-minute portrait walk that feels like you’ve gone miles from the guests.
- Inside the Ballroom and Library — for the backup plan when Yorkshire decides to do Yorkshire things.
My honest advice — put aside around 30 minutes for couple portraits and another 15 for group shots. You don’t need longer than that at Cannon Hall because the options are so close together.
What does a wedding photography timeline at Cannon Hall look like?
Every wedding is different but here’s a realistic timeline for a summer ceremony at 2pm, which is one of the most popular slots. I’ve shaped this around the 30/5 rule — everything takes about six times longer than you think it will.
- 11:30am — I arrive for bridal prep at your hotel or home. Hang the dress near a window for me to photograph.
- 1:15pm — Prep wraps, time for a glass of fizz and a breather.
- 1:45pm — Guests arriving at Cannon Hall, I’m capturing the venue details and your partner’s nerves.
- 2:00pm — Ceremony.
- 2:30pm — Confetti, then drinks reception in the Walled Garden.
- 3:00pm — Group photos (keep the list short, your guests will thank you).
- 3:30pm — Couple portraits. 20 to 30 minutes is plenty.
- 4:30pm — Wedding breakfast.
- 6:30pm — Speeches wrap, cut the cake.
- 7:00pm — Golden hour portraits outside if the weather is behaving.
- 8:00pm — First dance and party.
What happens if it rains on your Cannon Hall wedding day?
Short version: we carry on and the photos still look great. I’ve photographed more than a few rainy Yorkshire weddings and honestly some of the best images come from them. Cannon Hall has enough indoor space that a Deer Shelter ceremony can usually be moved inside with a bit of notice, and the Ballroom and Library both give us beautiful light for portraits when outdoors isn’t working.
I always bring a couple of large clear umbrellas too, and if there’s a break in the weather we’ll grab ten minutes outside for a few key shots. That’s it. No panic, no reshoots, no drama.
What’s the best time of year to get married at Cannon Hall?
Honestly, there isn’t a bad one, but each season has its own flavour:
- Spring — fresh greens, daffodils, longer evenings starting to come back. March and April can be chilly but gorgeous.
- Summer — the obvious favourite. Walled Garden in full bloom, late sunsets, the Deer Shelter at its best.
- Autumn — my personal pick. The parkland turns gold and russet and the light is soft all day long. September and October are magical.
- Winter — cosy interiors, candlelight, the chance of bare trees against low sunlight. The Library really comes into its own.

Frequently asked questions about Cannon Hall weddings
How many guests can Cannon Hall hold for a wedding?
Capacity depends on the room. The Ballroom takes the largest numbers, the Library is suited to more intimate ceremonies, and the Deer Shelter has a flexible outdoor capacity. Cannon Hall’s weddings team will confirm exact numbers for your date and setup.
Is there parking at Cannon Hall for wedding guests?
Yes, Cannon Hall has a large visitor car park within the estate grounds, a short walk from the Hall itself. It’s worth briefing guests in advance so no one ends up lost between the cars and the ceremony.
Can you have confetti at Cannon Hall?
Biodegradable confetti is usually allowed outdoors. Check with the Cannon Hall weddings team when you book — policies can vary and some venues restrict petals in certain areas.
What time should a Cannon Hall ceremony start for the best photos?
Early afternoon works beautifully year-round. For summer weddings, a 1pm or 2pm start gives you a relaxed drinks reception, a comfortable wedding breakfast and still leaves golden hour for portraits. For autumn and winter, nudge the ceremony a little earlier so you don’t lose the light.
How far is Cannon Hall from Barnsley town centre?
Cannon Hall is roughly 15 minutes by car from Barnsley town centre, near the village of Cawthorne. It’s just off the A635 and a short drive from junction 37 of the M1.
Is Cannon Hall suitable for a winter wedding?
Absolutely. The Library and Ballroom are both licensed indoor ceremony spaces and the Hall looks stunning in winter light. Bare trees, frost on the grass, and candlelit interiors give you a completely different mood from summer — and your photographer will love it.
